The city of Ampére in Brazil

With a population of over 20,000, this city was built on the banks of the river Ampére, from which it takes its name. The river was named in honour of André-Marie Ampère in the 19th century. The grave accent, which does not exist in Portuguese, has been replaced by an acute accent.

The town of Ampére, in the state of Paraná, is an honorary member of the Société des Amis d’André-Marie Ampère.
