Birth of André-Marie Ampère

André-Marie Ampère was born in Lyon on January 20, 1775. His father was a silk merchant, and his mother Jeanne-Antoinette de Sutières-Sarcey also came from a family of silk merchants. The couple lived in the Saint Nizier district of Lyon. They spent summers at their property in Poleymieux aux Monts d’Or (now the André-Marie Ampère Museum). In 1785, the Poleymieux estate became the family’s main residence with their three children, Antoinette, André-Marie and Joséphine.
